Te Ara Kairangi Commences
Te Roopu Huihuinga Hauora Inc. has commenced a quality review of each of its ten Maori Health Providers.  The Te Ara Kairangi (TAK) review focuses on identifying processes and procedures within three broad headings, Business and Administration, Clinical Practice and Safety and Governance and Leadership.  The purpose of the review is to identify quality gaps and then develop improvement plans for providers to implement.  We envisage the review process to be undertaken over the months of April and May with recommendations available within a month of each review.  TAK will give TRHHI base line data on where each Provider is in terms of quality service delivery.  The results of this process will help TRHHI in its ability to focus time and resources to assist in improving the quality of provider operations.  We also see it as a catalyst to the implementation of more vigorous quality improvement programmes such as Te Wana.

2002 Study Grants Awarded

TRHHI is proud to have an opportunity to support our people in their endevours to upskill and train. TRHHI recognized that there were already a number of people who were holding qualifications in areas such as Mental Health, Health Promotion and Maori that were currently employed by our providers, who wanted to move on to the next level but were unable to because they lacked the necessary resources to do so. We have just recently completed the study grant assessment process and have awarded 26 study grants in total. Te Roopu Huihuinga congratulates all successful applicants and wish you well in your chosen studies for the 2002 academic year.

"Arawhata ki te Rangi" Launch

Te Roopu Huihuinga Hauora Inc. officially launched its strategic plan titled "Arawhata ki te Rangi" on Saturday 15 September 2001 at Mangaroa Marae, Hastings.  The key note speakers were Minister of Maori Affairs, Parekura Horomia and Te Roopu Huihuinga Hauora Chairman, Syd Jackson.  Te Arawhata ki te Rangi clearly articulates Te Roopu Huihuinga Hauora's strategic direction for the next 5 years.  Parekura commented that the plan "gave a holistic approach to Maori service provision as it focused on a range of issues that impact on the overall 'wellness' of maori, such as health, employment, housing, education and  Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga".

NZA Gold Training Commences

Maori Provider staff concentrating hard during Group Training Day

One of TRHHI’s objectives has been to ensure that providers have "robust and efficient financial systems". A project to implement an electronic financial system across all TRHHI providers was initiated to achieve this objective. Over the past three months steady progress had been made on training our providers to use the NZA Gold accounting package. Up until the August 1 the following milestones have been met:

  • Negotiations with prospective vendors (May 2001)

  • Vendors chosen (May 2001)

  • NZA Gold package presented to all providers (May 25, 2001)

  • Pricing negotiations and project planning with Devine computing (June, 2001)

  • Initial hands on group training and demonstration for all providers (July 13, 2001)

  • Installation of software on provider PC’s (July 16 – 19, 2001)

  • Full day hands on group training for all providers (July 20, 2001)

  • Development of general ledger template for providers (July 24 – 30, 2001)

Over the month of August, the configuration of the general ledger will be implemented across all providers. Opening accounts will be entered and the system will be ready to go "live". One on one training will be carried out over this time to ensure that providers are comfortable with the monthly procedures for each module. Any queries can be directed to TRHHI Business & Finance Manager, Bayden Barber.

Provider Business Seminars
Over the past 3 months Te Roopu Huihuinga Hauora has been working closely with BIZ Hastings to develop the business skills of Hauora staff. Since mid April 2001, over twenty staff from TRHHI member providers have participated in the full day seminars that have focused on a range of topics including, using technology in business, e-mail and the Internet, marketing and communications, business planning, financial planning and the staffing process.

Hauora staff have been quick to commended both the standard of the presenters (all of which have extensive experience in their respective fields) and the quality of the content material delivered. TRHHI Business and Finance Manager, Bayden Barber has worked closely with BIZ Hastings manager Bill Logan to ensure that seminar content focused on the needs of TRHHI providers and was practicable enough to implement into their organisations with minimal fuss. The seminars also provided opportunities to develop networks with other Maori in business.

TE WANA Quality Programme

Te Wana is about standards aimed at promoting quality outcomes for consumers, to guide staff in service development and to enable quality improvement, evaluation and accountability. Their purpose is to develop a consistent, high level of quality across services. They do not aim to impose uniformity, standardization or a minimal level of quality.

TRHHI sees our members as being proactive in their objectives in the development of their services to a high health standard. We thank those services who are participating in this project.
