Whanui was established in 1997, as the health provider unit of Ngati Kahungunu
ki Wairarapa Maori Executive Taiwhenua. In the beginning of 2001, it
re-established itself as a separate entity from Ngati Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa. It
is governed by a board of five trustees and employs a Manager and currently a
staff of eight, with further appointments pending. It operates a General
Practice Clinic with a general practitioner and 2 staff on its premises under
joint cost-sharing arrangements with a larger doctor’s surgery. The region
covered is Mt Bruce in the North to Cape Palliser in the South; the eastern
coastline for Mataikona in the north to Ocean Beach in the South, the Tararua
Ranges and the Rimutaka Hill defines the western boundary.
The funded health services provided
are: Tamariki Ora – Well-child Maori Health Promotion Whanau Ora for health and
promotion education services in the MHGPAs Maori Provider Development Scheme
One-off grant Primary health care GP Clinic Maori Cervical Screening
Clinics/Education Community Asthma Disease State Management Health services provided without
funding are: Rongoa Maori/Mirimiri Community Development services
provided without funding are: Back up services to clients
requiring transport to hospital Assistance with social services
and agencies Advocacy for health, benefits
and consumer rights Whaiora Whanui has 3,410 registered
clients, of which the majority are Maori.
